Audio: The inside story of the fight to save SPC by its boss @MD_SPC

[clear] By Margo Kingston, 14 March, 2014 I spoke to SPC Ardmona managing director Peter Kelly for the first time this morning. He was on speaker phone with his marketing and communication director Bronwyn Powell. I had all your Twitter questions written down to ask, but Peter had read them all last night in preparation for our interview. My recording failed after the first 25 minutes and didn’t pic up till 44 minutes in. So I had a nervous breakdown, so to speak, but then I let that go and looked at what I had. Here is 25 amazing minutes of Peter Kelly telling the inside story of the fight to […]

Will Libs bite bullet, withdraw Howard’s over-the-top entitlements to self-funded retirees?

By Margo Kingston  @margokingston1 9th March, 2014 When Samantha Maiden reported today that the Audit Commission wanted super-generous seniors health card benefits to self-funded retirees reversed, I dug up my 2002 SMH budget comment on the matter. The Libs are to blame for this totally unsustainable entitlement culture they knew would help cripple the budget over time due to our aging population. If they don’t act in the budget and instead just cut benefits for the less well-off they will be credibility-naked. * Don’t hold your breath for action Source SMH: http://www.smh.com.au/specials/budget2002/730/730_6.html What a shocking dilemma! The Liberals overwhelmingly won the over-55 vote at the 2001 election, while Labor outpolled them […]

Reza’s death demands a judicial inquiry, but where is the pressure? @GregDyett reports

[clear] By Margo Kingston  @margokingston1 27th February 2014 Here is the transcript and audio of  this evening’s SBS World Radio item by Greg Dyett @GregDyett on the Manus Island detention centre review and whether it will do the job. I’m thrilled there are a few journalists who understand how important this matter is for the victims and their families. Thanks for caring, Greg. Still no Manus review terms of reference? Anyone demanded judicial inquiry so G4S staff give fearless evidence, powers to gather evidence? — Queen Margo (@margokingston1) February 25, 2014 After his piece, I’ve taken the liberty of publishing a piece by David Marr in the SMH on the […]

Press Council upholds @margokingston1 complaint against @dailytelegraph on #Ashby

By Margo Kingston  @margokingston1 27 February 2014 Soon after I took to Twitter in late 2012 I was horrified by the decision of the Daily Telegraph to bury its report of the December 12 Rares judgement dismissing James Ashby’s sexual harassment action against Peter Slipper as an abuse of Court process. The paper screamed headlines when it broke the lodgement of Ashby’s claim and pursued the case very, very hard (see The Daily Telegraph coverage of the Slipper scandal). I therefore made a complaint to the Press Council against that newspaper on December 22 and began a fascinating journey. On June 12 last year I flew to Sydney at my own expense for […]

Margo interviews @macavitykat, monopole sitter at #leardblockade

By Margo Kingston @margokingston1 31st January 2014 I met Kat Moore briefly the evening before she was arrested on Tuesday at #Leardblockade up a monopole on the Whitehaven construction site after stopping 13 Trucks from working all day. I interviewed her yesterday by phone shortly after her return to Melbourne. Margo How does it feel to be home after that experience? Kat It feels good. I feel more entitled to be actively speaking about this. I’ve taken that stand, so I’m not just sitting on the sideline preaching. I’m actually doing something about it. Margo How did you come to be at #leardblockade? Kat  I found out about the Australian […]
