Lianna Sliwczynski, Batman Candidate, The Australian Sex Party

[clear] By Bumpy Favell 4 Sept 2013 I requested an interview with Lianna Sliwczynski, the Australian Sex Party, ASP candidate for Batman in late July 2013, along with all of the other Batman candidates. If candidates didn’t reply within a few days, I kept contacting them. Three responded promptly: Phillip Sutton, Save the Planet Party, Alex Bhathal, Greens and David Feeney, Labor. But there was no response from Lianna despite repeated attempts. Since the election was called on August 4, I hadn’t seen anything in my electorate from either the ASP or their candidate for this marginal seat – no posters, leaflets, or interviews in the local papers. In late August, […]

Labor’s David Feeney expects a lift in Batman from Liberals’ move to preference Greens last

August 18, 2013 by Bumpy Favell The day of our interview, David Feeney resigned from his Senate position to run for the House of Representatives in the long held Labor seat of Batman, in the suburban north of Melbourne. Feeney is between offices, so we meet at a big, empty Rydges Hotel café overlooking Bell St, Preston, on a stormy day. He comes with his campaign manager Jeff who organized the interview. Feeney is wearing a suit and … blue tie. I ask him about his musical tastes first up, and to my surprise he says he’s a huge fan of the Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran and Frankie Goes […]

Greens gear up for their “best chance ever” in Batman, with Alex Bhathal taking on Labor’s David Feeney

by Bumpy Favell August 17, 2013 I met Batman’s Greens candidate, Alex Bhathal in a café in Brunswick St, Fitzroy – a couple of doors down from her work, during her lunch hour. Bhathal is an imposing figure, at least 1.8m – and gracious, considering I forgot to press record for the first 5 minutes of the interview. We started again… Favell: So, how did you get involved in politics? Bhathal: My interest in politics stemmed from the early 70s. I remember the Whitlam campaign really clearly. I was quite fascinated. Whitlam was elected. I was eight and about three months later my dad came home from work early, which […]

Batman, saving the planet: @BumpyF interview

Philip Sutton – Save the Planet Party Candidate for Batman, Victoria By Bumpy Favell 5 August 2013 When Save the Planet Party’s Batman candidate, Philip Sutton, was little he wanted to work in a zoo, so he studied veterinary science. In 1974 he decided the world needed to be saved. He never practiced as a vet, instead becoming deeply involved in environmental education and activism. Sutton was a Labor Party member for 10 years, then joined the Greens. “Just before I got involved in the ALP I thought to myself, if I did one thing in my life, what would it be? I decided it would be to get endangered […]

Greens charge in Batman: @BumpyF reports

View Larger Map Batman Seat Profile By Bumpy Favell 23 July 2013 I’ll write about my electorate of Batman, which covers a 66 sq km chunk of Melbourne’s northern suburbs. The Batman electorate is named after John Batman, a white grazier and businessman who was behind possibly the one and only treaty ever signed in Australia. This ‘treaty’ was made with some of the Wurundjeri people, the Woi-wurrung language group. On the 6th of June 1835, Batman met with a group of ngurungaetas, Wurundjeri heads of family, most likely on the banks of Merri Creek (near what is now Rushall station, Northcote) – and a document was signed. Batman claimed […]
