Back to the #leardblockade: report by @RobinMosman

Warwick and I are just home again after taking a group of silver-haired oldies from the Blue Mountains Conservation Society to the Leard Blockade. The plan was that our obvious super-respectability and elder wisdom would look impressive on Facebook, and hopefully add more weight to opposition to the clearing of the Leard Forest for coal mining. Here in the Blue Mountains we are no strangers to the threat of coal and CSG mining. Over the last 4 years the Society, and hundreds of its members, have put in more than 20 detailed submissions to do with the expansion of existing coal mines here and the establishment of new ones, 8 […]

Innumerate or deceptive: @adropex dissects @TheIPA ‘report’ into ABC coal coverage #leardblockade

Innumerate Ignorance or Calculated Deception It is unfortunate that the IPA, and in particular James Paterson, did not take note of the ‘scholarship’ referred to in their recent report of the ABC’s coverage of ‘Australia’s energy choices’ and apply it to their own publication. It would undoubtedly have saved them the embarrassment of making public a deeply flawed piece of political rhetoric loosely dressed up as a quasi research effort that would never pass the most basic academic peer review. A mere glance at the report’s title is sufficient to sound warning bells that the proffered document may not tick all the ethical research boxes. Whilst ‘Public Broadcaster or Green […]

A crash course in CSG’s courtship of farmers: @Thom_Mitchell reports from #Pilliga #leardblockade

“IF the people of Narrabri think they’re going on a date with the handsome new stranger in town, they’re going to go home and find they’ve been raped,” president of People for the Plains, Hugh Barrett, said as we strained to hear. Hugh was giving an interview to ABC radio Tamworth. He was referring to the courtship of Narrabri and surrounds by Coal Seam Gas company (CSG), Santos. People for the Plains is a group fighting to block the development of CSG on the Liverpool Plains. Hugh was speaking on behalf of twenty-five people who’d spent three days touring South East Queensland, talking to people living in and around CSG fields […]

‘Not a criminal in the classic sense’: @DrRimmer on the sentencing of Jono Moylan #leardblockade #standwithjono

ON July 25, 2014, Justice David Davies sentenced Jonathan Moylan at the Supreme Court of New South Wales for a breach of section 1041E (1) of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth). The ruling is a careful and deliberate decision, showing equipoise. Justice Davies has a reputation for being a thoughtful and philosophical adjudicator. The judge convicted and sentenced Moylan to imprisonment for 1 year and 8 months. The judge ordered that Moylan be “immediately released upon giving security by way of recognisance in the sum of $1000 to be of good behaviour for a period of 2 years commencing today”. On January 7, 2013, Moylan issued a hoax press […]

Still hoping to get arrested before I die: Robin Mosman, 73, reports her adventure at #leardblockade

My husband and I have just come back from the Leard Forest Blockade. We went because of a combination of total frustration at the lack of any meaningful action by the Federal or NSW state governments on climate change, and because we were outraged at the NSW Environment Minister’s action in allowing winter clearing of the Leard forest to facilitate yet another coal mine. Sadly we didn’t actually get to see the forest. The beautiful grassy white-box woodland, the last remnant of the vegetation that once carved a swathe west of the Great Divide from Queensland to Victoria, is now completely blocked from the public by police. This remnant forest […]

Civil rights and wrongs at #leardblockade: @adropex comments

[clear] [clear] Most Australians would take for granted that in a democracy such as ours certain human rights and freedoms are a given. In fact, the Australian constitution is limited in its articulation of human rights to the point of barely referencing them. We do not have an equivalent to the United States Bill of Rights and we do not have a First Amendment, which guarantees freedoms with respect to religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. As a founding member of the United Nations, Australia participated in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and is signatory to various other international human rights treaties. Most […]
