The right to insult – Murdoch suggests Muslims to blame for #MH370: @e2mq173 comments

18th March 2014 By Errol Brandt From Left Field Rupert Murdoch was in fine form over the weekend, making wild allegations about those responsible for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight. Rupert made it clear that he believed “Muslims” were to blame for the missing flight. Without evidence – unless he is privy to information denied authorities around the world – he suggests the US and China should blame them anyway.   If not for the content, Rupert’s tweets are significant because they demonstrate the need for legal protection from bigotry, bullying and prejudice, especially those from high-profile individuals who should know better. Rupert’s first major mistake is that he doesn’t […]

Crystal ball predictions for politics 2014 by @sarah_capper

By Sarah [email protected]_capper 14th February 2014 Our federal representatives, who we ushered in with gusto last September, returned to Canberra this week – the land of what Wikipedia (hey, if it’s good enough for the Environment Minister) describes as being home to “politics, public service, pornography, pyrotechnics, pot and prostitution – the “Six P’s” as they are known.” Let’s make it seven: PRIDE. It may seem like an eternity, but the Abbott Government has been in power for just over 100 days (approaching the 150-day-mark). Typically, modern Australian political parties get at least two terms to flex their governing muscles. The first term is often reserved for doing the “tricky” business – running with agendas that are not […]

Freedom commissioner Tim Wilson: method to Abbott’s madness @e2mq173 comments

By Errol Brandt [email protected] The Abbott government has been kind to its supporters by rewarding a number of them with plum government roles. The first came as a spiteful act by Julie Bishop. Days before former Victorian Labor premier Steve Bracks was due to start as Consul-General in New York, Julie Bishop cancelled the appointment announced by Foreign Minister Carr in May 2013. The rumoured replacement for this prestigious role is Howard government power-broker Nick Minchin. ABC journalist (and former ALP member), Barrie Cassidy, was dumped as chair of the innocuous Old Parliament House Advisory Committee. Senator Brandis explained to Cassidy that he has “a strong view” that journalists and politicians […]

Bolt no free speech champion, just another rhetor*

By Thomas Connelly May 11,  2013 Margo: I read with incredulity Andrew Bolt’s begging letter to citizens to donate to the IPA’s fund to defend free speech http://support.ipa.org.au/. IPA donors Murdoch and Gina could finance a free speech fund with their spare change. This appeal is about something else, changing the very meaning of free speech to suit the very big, very rich, very powerful end of town. Shocks come in threes, and this surreal threesome kicked off with Abbott’s ode to Murdoch and his IPA as freedom’s discerning friends and his yes, Sir nod to the IPA’s policy wish list. The Brandis free speech fantasy kicked off this week […]

Nazi Greens an enemy of democracy, government decrees

By Margo Kingston October 29, 2003 Source: Webdiary “I intend to continue to call to the attention of the Australian people the extremely alarming, frightening similarities between the methods employed by contemporary green politics and the methods and the values of the Nazis.” Liberal Senator George Brandis launches a government campaign to destroy the Greens as a political force. George Brandis is a Queensland Liberal Senator. The Government chose him to conduct the tactics for and lead a front-on Parliamentary attack on the Greens which asserted that the party was an enemy of the State. The speech responds to a Greens’ motion for an inquiry into procedures for joint sittings of […]

Using Thatcher’s death to rewrite history, past and present

By Sarah Capper, Sheilas Editor Source: Sheilas 18 April 2013 When Germaine Greer penned a piece on the late “crocodile hunter” Steve Irwin for the Guardian shortly after his death from a stingray puncture, it was followed by howls of protest from all parts of the globe. Greer ended her ‘barbed’ take on the much-loved ‘Aussie legend’ with: “The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing 10 times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn.” As a […]

IPA and Murdoch are freedom’s discerning friends: Abbott

By Tony Abbott April 4. 2013 Source: tonyabbott.com.au Andrew, thank you so much for that truly lovely introduction. All I can say is: I prefer your judgments to your reminiscences! Mr Premier, Mr Lord Mayor, Your Eminence, parliamentary colleagues, I don’t want to single anyone out because there are so many of them here but I should particularly mention the Shadow Attorney-General George Brandis who did such magnificent work in opposing the current government’s attacks on free speech, family members of the founder of the IPA, CD Kemp, Gina Rinehart, who has given what I’m sure is the best speech that any one will give tonight, ladies and gentlemen. At […]

Shanahan and Bolt doctor a quote to accuse Conroy of doctoring a quote: Welcome to Murdoch news:

By Margo Kingston March 21, 2013 Stephen Conroy said on Insiders Denis Shanahan 19 March In his evidence to the Finkelstein Inquiry into media standards, Professor McKinnon… said: “One editor jovially once remarked that he would rather double his annual contribution than have a complaint upheld.” Andrew Bolt yesterday Headline: Labor uses doctored evidence to grab state control of the media How despicable – and hypocritical. The deceitful Gillard Government itself doctors a quote to justify its attack on the free press… That word “jovially” was omitted by the Government when it tried to argue it had reasons for demanding state control over the press… A joke by an editor is […]
