Token #ausvotes funding to Great Barrier Reef facing #extinction. A #climateemergency warns @takvera

We need to come to terms that the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem and coral reef ecosystems globally as we know them, are facing extinction. It is a climate emergency. The reef is our canary in a coalmine and it is now dying from the greenhouse gases we have released. Early surveys of the Great Barrier Reef showed that 93 percent of reefs were affected by coral bleaching. Scientists have been undertaking extensive aerial and underwater surveys since then to refine these initial survey results. Scientists from the Coral Reef Centre of Excellence are now reporting that over 35 percent of coral north of Cairns in the northern and central regions […]

Natural History Museum misses Anthropocene #climate education opportunity says @takvera

Like many visitors and tourists to London I took the opportunity to visit the London Natural History Museum. I visited this museum 19 years ago and spent a whole day there with my older step children when they were 11 and 9 years old. So I was keen to go back and share a new experience at the museum with my 15 year old daughter. Many interactive exhibits had changed, but many case exhibits looked pretty much exactly as I remembered them. I remember my visit to the Mammals room with the Blue Whale as the centre piece hanging from the ceiling. The blue whale was still there but surrounded […]

Will @LisaNevilleMP move fast enough on #GFNP to save Leadbeater’s possum from #extinction? asks @Takvera #vicpol

Leadbeater’s Possum, also known as Victoria’s fairy possum, is one of those species fighting for survival against the odds and against the juggernaut that is human industrial society. Finally last month, on the recommendation of the Threatened Species Scientific Committee, Leadbeater’s Possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) was upgraded to being listed as critically endangered under the EPBC Act. The announcement was made by Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt on April 22, 2015. “The challenges facing this iconic species are significant. It has undergone very severe population declines in recent decades with numbers having decreased by more than 80 per cent since the mid 1980s.” said Hunt. “That is why we will be […]

Ecologist Dave Paull on criticisms of his #NSWpol resignation: @Thom_Mitchell reports #protectgloucester

Dave Paull: The Community Deserves Answers. Just before Christmas Dave Paull, the Biodiversity Officer at the Newcastle branch of the Office of Environment and Heritage, resigned in disgust from his position. He was asked to write a resignation letter, something he initially refused to do, because he disagreed with the way he’d been treated before and during his resignation. Mr Paull – an ecologist of more than 25 years experience – decided after reflecting over the Christmas break, to write the resignation letter, and to share it with the NSW public. A broken system, he said in the letter, was putting the expert, fact based, work of scientists behind the […]
