Fracking, Western Power privatisation issues as Western Australia goes to the polls #WAvotes – @takvera

Fracking is in it’s relative infancy in Western Australia, but is at the stage where it could be substantially expanded to encompass the Kimberley, the grain belt and south-west. Author Tim Winton has made an impassioned plea in the lead up to the Western Australian state election due to be held on 11 March, on the Frack Free Future website “The WA Government has granted gas fracking exploration leases over some of our most productive farmland, our most precious groundwater aquifers, and our favorite holiday areas – including the South West, the Kimberley, and Ningaloo. “Fracking is a risky industry with a terrible reputation globally. It’s like a cancer on […]

Permanent #VicGasBan a win for people power, agriculture and #climate reports @takvera

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced a permanent ban on the exploration and development of all onshore unconventional gas in Victoria, including hydraulic fracturing (‘fracking’) and coal seam gas. Victoria is the first Australian state to ban onshore fracking.

The #protectgloucester camp: @coolmccool reports

The Protect Gloucester camp is now open and ready for business. Situated among breath-taking scenery close to AGL’s fracking site, the camp is manned by a team of dedicated locals, who have put in many hours of hard work to get the camp ready. Built to meet very stringent regulations demanded by the local council authorities, the camp has scores of neatly laid out and spacious drive-in/drive-out plots which would put many a paid caravan park to shame. Visitors are welcomed at the gate by volunteers and informed of the camp rules, briefed on the facilities available, and are made to feel very welcome. Some of the plots are […]

The blockade of the drill site, which began almost four months ago in response to the planned tight sands gas mining of prime agricultural land, has grown steadily in size with thousands of people, from all walks of life, regularly attending. From landholders to professionals and doctors to academics, writers, teachers, Mayors and Indigenous elders, grandparents and even members of the Clergy – the […]

Dear @mikebairdMP, respect the people and tell police not to smash #BentleyBlockade, by @janbarham

Margo: Jan Barham was the Mayor of Byron Shire, the first directly elected Green mayor in Australia. She is a Greens member of the NSW Legislative Council, and the Party’s spokesperson on Northern NSW. Here is her speech to Parliament on May 6 imploring the Government to reverse its order for riot police to smash the #BentleyBlockade, most likely on May 19 or 20. She will join several other local, State and Federal politicians at the blockade in the days preceding the expected police attack.  By Ms Jan BARHAM, MLC 12 May 2014 Democracy is alive and well in regional New South Wales, where communities are showing up and speaking up […]

#CSG is risky business for aquifers: @NaomiTWS proves even the ‘good guys’ know it

By Naomi Hogan @NaomiTWS 19th March 2014  Introduction, by Margo Kingston: The NSW Government and Santos did not want the people to know that Coal Seam Gas (#CSG) exploration in the Pilliga State Forest had polluted an aquifer, because that would blow their cover that fracking could not harm the Great Artesian Basin. We know this terrible truth because Naomi Hogan, the Wilderness Society’s full time #Pilliga campaigner, worked long and hard to uncover the truth, and because Australia still has some mainstream media which wants to report the truth in the public interest, in this case the Sydney Morning Herald and the ABC. Naomi tells a fascinating journalistic detective story I reckon you’ll […]

Your brief on the Santos #CSG #Pilliga saga, by @Wilderness_Aus

Introduction by Margo Kingston These are the latest media briefing notes of the Wilderness Society on the long-running fight to stop Santos fracking the #Pilliga State Forest on the Liverpool Plains in NSW for #CSG. I thought No Fibs readers might find the briefing useful as the story is now politically explosive and will get even more complicated. No Fibs citizen journalist Iris Ray Nunn is No Fibs’ #Pilliga reporter. Her latest report is ‘Repair and hope for the Pilliga Forest’.  Uranium poisoning Gas fracking giant Santos has been found guilty of poisoning an aquifer in the Pilliga Forest in north-west NSW with radioactive uranium 20 times safe levels as well as toxic heavy metals. This […]

Then they came for the farmers… #SPC #leardblockade

[clear] By Alison Parkes  6th February 2014 Two recent issues have been in the news lately concerning rural and regional communities – the impending closure of SPC and the Leardblockade. People in capital cities, on social media and old media talk about thinks like SPC or live export or another mine as if they are unaffected by the impact of these things. As a farmer in a rural and regional area the impact of mining, climate change and job loses affect me now, but in the long run, these things affect all of us. More of us than ever are living on the coastal fringes, but the way some people […]
