G20: Over and out. The passing of Goss the Boss. Newman’s anti-graffiti laws net artist. High Court challenge to VLAD laws fails. Cash for rezoning: Seeney and Dickson’s caravan adventure. Age of entitlement still raging. . G20: Over and out Visions of Premier Campbell Newman steaming out of the Port of Brisbane to confront the Russian fleet were almost realised during the G20 summit. Obama’s Brisbane climate clarion call to Australia and the world

As we develop, as we focus on our econ, we cannot forget the need to lead on the global fight against climate change.  Now, I know that’s — (applause) — I know there’s been a healthy debate in this country about it.  (Laughter.)  Here in the Asia Pacific, nobody has more at stake when it comes to thinking about and then acting on climate change. Here, a climate that increases in temperature will mean more extreme and frequent storms, more flooding, rising seas that submerge Pacific islands.  Here in Australia, it means longer droughts, more wildfires.  The incredible natural glory of the Great Barrier Reef is threated.  Worldwide, this past […]

Brisbane G20: Peace and Protest #qldpol, @Qldaah

The G20 has descended on Brisbane under a raft of legislation dubbed “Newman Law”. If you’re ever offered a chance to NOT host a G20 conference, take it. The disruption brought about by road closures, vehicle searches, special police powers, armed soldiers and the general sense of inconvenience erodes any benefit. It’s a bit like giving the keys of your house to a party of complete strangers whilst you go and live in the garden shed for a month. Unlike hosting an expo or an Olympic games, there’s very little for the public to interact with. Except for a speech or two, the top 20 world leaders and entourage will […]
