Ain’t nothing like the real thing: #GriffithVotes candidates’ forum @GriffithElects reports

[clear] Video by Mark Doyle @ffrickenstein Both Bill Glasson and Terri Butler held virtual ‘town-hall’ meetings in recent days, using new technology which enabled them to talk simultaneously with audiences of 10,000 and more. These virtual meetings gave all the control to the candidates and their teams, allowed them to target particular sections of the electorate and run polls on voter intentions and priorities. They selected the questions, determined the options offered for the polls, while the audience got to listen passively, unless of course you were one of the few selected to ask a question. Well, on Wednesday night in the Griffith inner-city suburb of West End, we got […]

The ‘climate chaos’ challenge and the courage of candidates’ convictions in #GriffithVotes: @GriffithElects reports

[clear] According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Australia had its hottest year ever in 2013 and we have now experienced heatwaves and destructive fires in the first month of 2014. Twitter went viral this week with reports that Prince Charles has said of climate change sceptic that they are like “headless chickens” (of course, we would say chooks in Australia). Well I’m right with Prince Charles when he says, “It is baffling, I must say, that in our modern world we have such blind trust in science and technology that we all accept what science tells us about everything – until, that is, it comes to climate science”. All of […]

#Griffithvotes citizen journo @Griffithelects live twitter reports of Libs ‘group call’ and campaign launch

[clear] By Jan Bowman @GriffithElects Mass Teleconference in Griffith On Wednesday February 29 the LNP ran a mass virtual ‘town hall’ teleconference with voters in Griffith. Apparently Labor used this technology recently in Griffith to link party members with Opposition leader Bill Shorten and is planning something similar in the last week of the campaign. I arrived home from work on Tuesday to see my voice mail flashing. I rarely use my landline and had expected one of the usual wrong number messages. Instead there was a recorded message from Dr Glasson inviting me to join, on the following evening, a virtual town hall meeting with himself and Foreign Minister […]

Population, family and more new faces join the #GriffithVotes party @GriffithElects reports

By Jan Bowman  @GriffithElects 1st February 2014 In something of a surprise for the upcoming Griffith by-election, Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) is standing a candidate new to Griffith, but not new to the KAP. Ray Sawyer stood for the KAP in the division of Fairfax in 2013, a seat that was won by Clive Palmer, with Sawyer managing just 1.92 per cent of the vote. While he does not live in the region, Mr Sawyer described himself as someone who has “strong connections with the Griffith electorate.” His campaign literature revealed that he has operated a dance school for a number of years, which has given him “the opportunity to […]

Independents, pirates, and a bullet train: new faces in #GriffithVotes @GriffithElects reports

By Jan Bowman @GriffithElects 31st January 2014 Independent candidate in the Griffith by-election, Karel Boele, comes across as accomplished, considered and energetic. He has studied mechatronics, physics, and strategic affairs. He has managed large financial projects in South East Asia, and he currently runs a business which provides advice on participatory democracy and on complementary currencies such as Time banking. Among his clients is the NSW Government Department of Education and Communities, to which his company provides software and support for a time banking project in the Central Coast and Hunter Valley regions. He told No Fibs that he is in politics for the long haul. While he is standing […]

Griffith grudge match: Glasson’s Gladiators vs Butler’s Battlers @GriffithElects reports

By Jan Bowman  @GriffithElects 25th January 2014 Having a Prime Minister as the sitting member drew significant attention to Griffith during the 2013 federal election, but there is a sense that this time around the eyes of the nation will be on Griffith with renewed interest, many seeing this by-election as the first test for Tony Abbott’s government. On one side of the ring we have LNP candidate Dr Glasson, who is well liked in the electorate, and his personal appeal may be his greatest asset. He projected as much himself, when he was reported in the Fairfax press as saying that: “If we try to sell it (the election) […]
