Time for @mediaalliance to take charge of secret tapes ethics debate: @margokingston1 #MediaMargo #MediaWatch

I sent this email to the Media Alliance today. Dear Media Alliance, Last night’s Media Watch discussed the ethical dispute among journalists over the ethics of recording interviewees without their permission. The dispute shows serious disagreement on the matter. The Age believes it is always ethical. Some others, including me, believe it it permissible only in exceptional circumstances: In general it is unethical for a journo to record a private convo, phone or in person, w/o express or implied consent. #springst @bencubby — Margo Kingston (@margokingston1) July 29, 2014 After some debate among journalists on Twitter, I commissioned media law and ethics professor Mark Pearson, who writes the No Fibs media […]

New Politics, New Media: On-the-ground #MarchinMarch reporting by citizen journalist @jansant

By Wayne Jansson  @jansant 20th March 2014 It’s normal to start a story at the beginning. I’m going to start smack bang in the middle with this one, as it sums up one of the many factors which forced 100,000 plus people to MarchInMarch (MiM) around Australia. I say forced intentionally. People don’t take to the streets in the numbers they did last weekend unless they feel their backs are against the wall. Driving up the Hume after covering the Melbourne MiM I listened to ABC News Radio (ABCNewsRadio). News updates reported that thousands of people had marched around the country over the weekend. This was about the sum total of the reports. After […]

Reporting Indi: A reflection by Margo Kingston

[clear] By Margo Kingston, 1 December 2013 I take the Gold Coast train to Brisbane airport, the plane to Melbourne, the sky bus to Southern Cross Station, the train to Seymour, and the bus to Wangaratta train station. Wayne Jansson leads me to his battered old car and drives me to the hamlet of St James. A late frost has killed the canola oil crop, and the farmers who couldn’t afford to let the crop rot as fertilizer for next year have rolled it up into hay. The cherry trees look good. Wayne says his Mum Glenys and step father Mark will host my stay because he lives in a ramshackle […]

21 reasons candidates ignore media requests, by Forde reporter @StephanieDale22

By Stephanie Dale @stephaniedale22 20 August 2013 More than a week ago, No Fibs sent a list of standardised questions to the seven candidates vying for the seat of Forde, sandwiched between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Four responded – all three women and Peter Beattie. Was that a coincidence? As the reporter who compiled and distributed those questions, and posted the answers, as I stared at the No Fibs Q & A post I became somewhat enthralled by the common thread. Prior to posting, I was puzzled by why the three absentees would not respond to free, standardised, level playing field, no risk of media interpretation, in their own words […]

MSM to blogger: ‘Stunt – so what did she say?’

By Kim Berry March 5, 2013 EDITOR’S NOTE: Monday night dummy spit: https://twitter.com/margokingston1/status/308477882257272832 Next morning I see this: With blog royalty after their dinner with @juliagillard – @edenland @woogsworld @babymacbeth and @allconsuming twitter.com/hughriminton/s… — hughriminton (@hughriminton) March 4, 2013 I check out the dinner guests and find that I follow @allconsuming and she follows me so I DM and here’s a piece by her for us. On Monday night I dined with the Prime Minister. This followed last year’s morning tea and then Christmas drinks with her at Kirribilli House, as part of a select group of ‘influential women in digital media’. I totally acknowledge this is a very big deal, […]

Confessions of a News Junkie or Bye, Bye, Outdated Media, I’ve got a New Dealer

By Space Kidette Source: Satellite News Network February 3rd, 2013 Space Kidette Note: To put this post into context, you may want to read About page. How did I go from being Outdated Media’s biggest fanboi to a consumer openly advocating against a media’s vile product? News vs. Opinion  The first and biggest problem for me was the almost insidious shift from fact-based news to the relentless drivel from small minded people being passed off as faux intellectual ‘opinion pieces’. Somewhere along the line media outlets decided what consumers were clamouring for was their opinion. The who, what, when, where, why and how much of any news event often gets brushed aside, […]
