The weekend saw more than 600,000 people take to the streets in 175 countries calling on world leaders to agree on binding emission reductions during the Paris Climate Talks. #Hazelwood owner #Engie stops new #coal investment reports @takvera

There has been a campaign to close down the aging and highly polluting Hazelwood coal mine and power station for several years. Hazelwood’s French owner GDF Suez recently rebranded itself as Engie and in their latest announcement declared they would stop investing in new coal plants. But they refused to give any changed undertaking regarding operating plants such as Hazelwood and Loy Yang B power stations in the La Trobe Valley of Victoria. It’s pretty irritating living next to the coal train line in the shadow of the world’s largest coal port. The outside walls of our house are constantly covered in a layer of coal dust. I have to wash the dust out of the laundry baskets every time we use them (and yes, we do regularly do laundry).
