The ‘suffering’ of Peter Dutton and Scott Morrison – @Qldaah #auspol

The true victims of the refugee crisis on Nauru and Manus Island revealed.

Anglican church offers #refugees sanctuary from @PeterDutton_MP’s “black shirts”: @jansant reports

Churches have stepped up their campaign to end Australia’s harmful refugee policies by offering sanctuary to 267 people including 37 babies, facing imminent removal to Nauru. Refugee advocates had hoped for a change in the harsh and punitive government policies under new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull (@TurnbullMalcolm), this has not eventuated. The move will draw international attention to Australia’s inhumane refugee policies as news spreads through religious communities around the globe. In a prepared statement (full text below), The Anglican Dean of Brisbane and Chair of the Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce said: This is a hugely significant action for any Australian church to take.  Historically churches have afforded sanctuary to […]

The collected rage of Chris Kenny post-Abyan interview – @Qldaah #auspol

Analysis The Australian’s associate editor and former chief of staff to Malcolm Turnbull, Chris Kenny was the first and only journalist to be granted a visa to visit and report on the Australian asylum seeker detention centres located on the island nation of Nauru. Neither the paper or Kenny would confirm if the $8,000 application fee was paid. A storm of criticism hit Kenny when he filed a report on alleged rape victim Abyan. As abortion is illegal on Nauru, the pregnant mother had been flown to Australia for the procedure. It did not take place and Abyan was returned to Nauru. The Australian Government maintained that she told officials on Australian soil that she […]

How we talk about refugees matters: @novidados comments

It has been an extraordinary few days. Last Thursday, Immigration Minister Peter Dutton, speaking in a radio interview, accused refugees being held in Australia’s notorious detention camps of ‘running a racket’ to ‘blackmail’ the government into providing proper medical treatment for pregnant women. The next day, a chartered plane took a pregnant woman back to Nauru to avoid a court injunction. The woman, known by the pseudonym Abyan, had been brought to Australia when it emerged she had been raped and had become pregnant but was unable to have an abortion on Nauru. Only after intense lobbying from refugee advocates was she was brought to Villawood Detention Centre where she […]

Compassionistas Vs Christianistas: Choosing refugees based on religion highly unusual – @Qldaah #auspol

The Australian’s Chris Kenny has used the word “compassionistas” to decry people of “moral vanity” who responded to the current Syrian refugee crisis yet seemingly ignored the deaths at sea under the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd Government. Kenny wrote, “The moral poseurs – or compassionistas as I have called them – are at pains to show us their compassionate virtue but they offer no practical solutions to a difficult policy issue.” Read more. Much of the debate over Twitter in recent days has been around how compassionate a nation Australia is. The Refugee Council of Australia agreed with The Daily Telegraph columnist Miranda Devine that Australia was the most generous but only if you precluded from […]

Politicians ignore questions about detention of #refugees: @JulianBurnside reports

Note: This piece previously published on Julian Burnside’s website: http://www.julianburnside.com.au/politicians-ignore-questions-about-detention-of-refugees/ It is a miserable thing to report, but our politicians who inflict unspeakable misery on refugees are apparently not willing to explain themselves. An Australian citizen recently wrote to six Federal MPs asking a couple of very simple questions.  Each letter was less than a page long.  Five of the six MPs simply ignored her letters.  Apart for being bad manners, it shows utter contempt for the electorate.  The worst offenders – the ones who simply ignored the letters – are: Josh Frydenberg – ignored every letter Kevin Andrews – ignored every letter Sarah Henderson – ignored every letter Michael […]

#Aid, push factors and people smuggling #OnWaterGate – @mary_sayed comments

The latest low to which the Australian Government – current and previous – has sunk in order to push refugees out of sight and out of mind has made headline news. The major parties’ blind determination to treat refugees as inhumanely as possible seems to know no bounds. We are now refusing to allow boats to enter Australian waters on the premise that we are “saving lives”. We claim to want to put the people smugglers out of business. Yet we seem to be paying people smugglers to turn back their boats. How are we saving lives by pushing boats back to danger? What is criminal for people smugglers to […]

John #MalcolmFraser AC 22nd Prime Minister of #auspol: @Jansant tribute

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser (@MalcolmFraser12) has left the building, and it feels empty without him. The man who had once torn Australia apart, became a voice of reason, decency and compassion in a sea of gutter level race fuelled political strategy. A child of the squattocracy, that in the end, was the reasoned and vocal champion of progressive politics. Fraser, over a few short years, became a much loved and respected member of the Twitter #auspol family, he didn’t use the hashtag very often, but we were always listening. John Malcolm Fraser AC, 22nd Prime Minister of Australia, was a genuine beacon of humanity. He was a fearless human […]

Torture report makes @IntlCrimCourt action against @TonyAbbottMHR’s #auspol likely: @jansant reports

On Monday, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan Mendez, released a report (below) that found Australia in violation of the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT). The report found multiple violations and identified the systematic nature resulting from government policy. Juan Mendez, is a survivor of torture and former special advisor on crime prevention to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (@IntlCrimCourt) in The Hague (ICC). The Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott (@TonyAbbottMHR), responded by declaring, Australians are “sick of being lectured to by the United Nations”. Abbott also claimed the United Nations would “have a lot more credibility if […]

Wilkie and Barns turn up #refugees heat on Abbott with “comprehensive brief” to ICC. @Jansant reports

Andrew Wilkie MP (@WilkieMP) and human rights advocate and lawyer Greg Barns (@BarnsGreg) have followed up their letter to The International Criminal Court (@IntlCrimCourt) in The Hague (ICC) of last October with a “comprehensive brief on this matter”. The full brief is published below. The ICC is currently also considering a submission (with additional information) prepared by lawyer and migration agent Tracie Aylmer (@taylmer). Wilkie and Barns first wrote to the ICC on October 22, 2014, requesting an investigation in accordance with Article 15(1) of the Rome Statute, “into crimes against humanity perpetrated by members of the Australian Government against persons arriving in Australian waters who are seeking protection”. Wilkie […]
