Lianna Sliwczynski, Batman Candidate, The Australian Sex Party

[clear] By Bumpy Favell 4 Sept 2013 I requested an interview with Lianna Sliwczynski, the Australian Sex Party, ASP candidate for Batman in late July 2013, along with all of the other Batman candidates. If candidates didn’t reply within a few days, I kept contacting them. Three responded promptly: Phillip Sutton, Save the Planet Party, Alex Bhathal, Greens and David Feeney, Labor. But there was no response from Lianna despite repeated attempts. Since the election was called on August 4, I hadn’t seen anything in my electorate from either the ASP or their candidate for this marginal seat – no posters, leaflets, or interviews in the local papers. In late August, […]

Greens increasing pressure on Thomson in Wills reports @takvera

By John Englart 4 September 2013 I was recruited by Margo to cover the election in the safe Labor seat of Wills (Seat Profile) in mid July. After writing 21 articles I suspect I have put in far more time and work than some of the candidates. We are at the point in Wills where the Green vote may overtake the Liberal vote for the first time. The Greens are beginning to challenge Labor. The campaign was marked by the absence of Liberal candidate Shilpa Hegde from all public forums and interviews. Surely the Liberal Party doesn’t expect people to vote for a candidate who doesn’t even attempt to engage […]

Wills Forum ends with call for compassion and decency to be reclaimed in politics reports @takvera

By John Englart 1 September 2013 The 3rd and final meet the candidates forum for Wills was hosted by the Brunswick Uniting Church on Friday night. Five candidates attended to present their policies and to take questions from a moderator and from the audience. But it was the very last response to the very last audience question that struck a responsive chord from all present. The question was “What can we look forward to under a Tony Abbott Government for Wills?” Candidates on the panel included Adrian Trajstman (Sex Party), Tim Read (Greens), Kelvin Thomson MP (ALP), Margarita Windisch (Socialist Alliance). Philip Sutton (Save the Planet party) was a late […]

Batman, saving the planet: @BumpyF interview

Philip Sutton – Save the Planet Party Candidate for Batman, Victoria By Bumpy Favell 5 August 2013 When Save the Planet Party’s Batman candidate, Philip Sutton, was little he wanted to work in a zoo, so he studied veterinary science. In 1974 he decided the world needed to be saved. He never practiced as a vet, instead becoming deeply involved in environmental education and activism. Sutton was a Labor Party member for 10 years, then joined the Greens. “Just before I got involved in the ALP I thought to myself, if I did one thing in my life, what would it be? I decided it would be to get endangered […]

Social media campaigning in Wills: @takvera reports

By John Englart 24 July 2013 Social media is impacting on how local election campaigns are being run, and even the Australian Electoral Commission has moved registering-to-vote and updating voter details online, specifically developing a Facebook app to motivate enrollment of new voters. Traditionally, local election campaigns rely on letterboxing, door knocking, and local newspaper advertisements and news profile articles to get the message out. This is still largely the case. Occasionally community-hosted meet-the-candidates forums are held. I hope to report on one such forum currently being organised by Climate Action Moreland in Wills in coming weeks. But the advent of social media has added an important 24/7 immediacy and interactive […]
