Thursday marked the fifth consecutive rise in Queensland’s trend unemployment rising to 6.7 percent.

Queensland’s unemployment has risen from 5.5 percent when the Newman Government came to power to a high this month of 6.5pc. In 2012, Queensland recorded “the steepest rise in unemployment in the state since Australian Bureau of Statistics records began in 1978”. Queensland’s highest youth unemployment region is Cairns with an unmatched 20pc. The Brotherhood of St Laurence recently conducted a nationwide study into youth unemployment and flagged it as being at crisis point.

Below is the long term data reflected in graphical form. All data is based on ‘Labour force’ from Queensland Treasury and Trade.

All regional data comes from ‘Regional labour force’ from Queensland Treasury and Trade.

Politicians frequently switch between trend and seasonally adjusted data based on which is more favourable to them. As reflected below, seasonally adjusted data tends to be more erratic than trend.

The acronyms FTE and PTE refer to full-time employment and part-time employment respectively.

In trend terms, there was a -0.1pc fall in FTE and a 0.3pc rise in PTE. Unemployment rose from 6.6pc to 6.7pc.

Queensland’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 6.8pc to 6.7pc.

In seasonally adjusted terms, FTE rose by 0.2pc and PTE rose by 3.3pc. The unemployment rate fell from 6.8pc to 6.7pc.

In trend terms, Queensland lost 1,400 FTE but gained 2,200 PTE for a total of 800 jobs for August.

In seasonally adjusted terms, Qld gained 3,000 FTE and gained 23,500 PTE for a total gain of 26,500 jobs for August.

A slight rise in trend participation rate, up from 66.4pc to 66.5. Australia’s trend participation rate also rose slightly from 64.7pc to 65.0pc

Seasonally adjusted, Queensland’s participation rate rose slightly from 66.2pc to 66.8pc. Australia’s also rose slightly from 64.8pc to 65.2pc.

In terms of trend Labour force Australia rose by 26,700 persons and Queensland by 3,500 persons.

Worst unemployment regions in Qld.

This graph shows the worst unemployment regions of Queensland. Moreton Bay – North now the worst unemployment region in Queensland at 9.7pc. Ipswich rose again to 9.5pc. Wide Bay remained high at 8.0pc, followed by 8pc in Cairns and 6.7pc on the Sunshine Coast.

With the regional average unemployment at 6.1pc, all of the following remain above the line; Morton Bay – North 9.7pc, Ipswich 9.5pc, Wide Bay at 8.7pc, Cairns at 8.0pc, Townsville 7.3pc, Logan – Beaudesert 7.2pc and Sunshine Coast 6.7pc.

On an annual basis,

Logan – Beaudesert region lost 14,900 FTE & 4,000 PTE for a total loss of 18,900 jobs with unemployment rising to 7.2pc.

Townsville lost 6,500 FTE and lost 2,600 PTE for a total loss of 9,100 jobs whilst unemployment rose to 7.3pc.

Cairns lost 7,900 FTE and lost 700 PTE for a total loss of 8,500 jobs whilst unemployment fell a notch to 8.0pc.

Wide Bay region lost 3,100 FTE and lost 5,400 PTE for total loss of 8,400 jobs whilst unemployment remained at 8.7pc.
