Comedian and former Triple J Breakfast host, Alex Dyson is contesting the federal seat of Wannon for the third time and his support has been growing since his first run in 2019.

In 2019, Dyson campaigned with the aim of engaging young people in politics, won just over 10% of the primary vote and along the way bagged the viral moment of the election.

At the last election the Voices of Wannon group endorsed Dyson and they have again for the upcoming 2025 election.

Dyson’s campaign team in 2019 consisted of his father and a few friends, maybe enough to field a “basketball team”. Today he’s gathered 1000 online supporters and hundreds of signed-up volunteers, which is more than when I spoke to Alex a couple of weeks ago.

At the 2022 election with the endorsement of the local Voices group, Dyson’s campaign had 198 volunteers and together they won 19.5% of the primary vote, a +9.64 swing.

Dyson made it through to the two candidate preferred contest and at this election requires less than a +4% (2CP) swing to win.

Former Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser previously held Wannon from December 1955 to 31 March 1983 and it’s long been a regional Liberal ‘blue ribbon’ seat.
