Campbell Newman exaggerating crime statistics

  • ABC Fact Check writes, “QLD crime rates have been dropping steadily for over 10 years, and the most recent data does not show a significant change in that trend. It is too soon to determine the impact of LNP policies on the trend, and individual statistics cited by the premier don’t tell the full story. The claim is exaggerated”: Campbell Newman exaggerating crime statistics ahead of QLD poll.

  • On February 7, 2014, Premier Campbell Newman labeled lawyers who defend bikies in court as “hired guns” and as being “part of the machine, part of the criminal gang machine”. Attempting to defend Newman’s comments, Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie made the comments specific by saying they Premier was referring to Chris Hannay Lawyers on the Gold Coast. Later in an ABC interview in March, Newman declared he would not be responding to the firms request for an apology and proudly stated “he [Chris Hannay] hasn’t sued me”. A lawsuit from the Hannay firm promptly followed the airing of the interview.
