‘Hired guns’ comment lands Newman in court

  • Joshua Robertson reports, “Queensland premier’s legal team tried to have deadline for lodging his defence in a $1.2m defamation lawsuit pushed back to the day before the state election”: Campbell Newman’s lawyers tried to delay deadline for defence of libel claim.
  • On February 7, 2014, Premier Campbell Newman labeled lawyers who defend bikies in court as “hired guns” and as being “part of the machine, part of the criminal gang machine”. Attempting to defend Newman’s comments, Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie made the comments specific by saying they Premier was referring to Chris Hannay Lawyers on the Gold Coast. Later in an ABC interview in March, Newman declared he would not be responding to the firms request for an apology and proudly stated “he [Chris Hannay] hasn’t sued me”. A lawsuit from the Hannay firm promptly followed the airing of the interview.
