The @NoFibs #ausvotes editorial: @margokingston1

Gonski decided it for me. Such a hard-won consensus to end the state-private war and embed a funding system based on need instead. Giving every child the best chance we can to succeed is an economic investment, proof of Australia’s commitment to egalitarianism and insurance against the ‘two nations’ phenomenon threatening revolution in the United Kingdom and the United States. This election is Australia’s last chance for Gonski. It is Labor’s ambitious attempt to make fair education funding as central to our identity as Medicare, and the struggle to do so over Liberal Party opposition is just as gruelling. If nothing else, Labor’s commitment to Gonski deserves the support of the […]

An outsider’s tax idea, by @margokingston1

The Turnbull government is reportedly considering Treasury options for a GST rise. https://t.co/KRs2BhQalt pic.twitter.com/RMgM9cjpkA — The Australian (@australian) October 31, 2015 I write this as a progressive who, like so  many other Australians, fought hard on social media to rid us of of a man who, we believed, did not represent Australian values. I write this as someone who, like many others, toasted the elevation of Malcolm Turnbull with profound relief, both for our country and because I could now live my life without having to be immersed in politics. So I write this as someone who now follows politics casually, largely though TV news. I’ve seen Turnbull open the […]

Please @turnbullmalcolm don’t soil new era with #Ashbygate liar @MalBrough_MP: @margokingston1 comments

What? Mal Brough is our Special Minister of State? Excuse me? Like so many Australians, I was filled with an unbearable lightness of being on the removal of Tony Abbott and with hope that a new era of honest, policy-based politics had begun. Yes, there was a little niggle when I saw Brough alongside Turnbull in the walk to the party room, but no, he’d never be promoted, surely. I tweeted concern, though, when it was reported that he’d helped do Mr Turnbull’s numbers: Uh-oh, Brough did Turnbull’s numbers. Will PM give #Ashbygate liar a ministry? http://t.co/b1ewhz6QkW @KnottMatthew pic.twitter.com/McotSna75R — Margo Kingston (@margokingston1) September 15, 2015 But Brough went unmentioned in […]

West Coast #Twitterati @Jackthelad1947 to report #CanningVotes from ground zero

Although I’m new to NoFibs, I have been blogging for over 10 years. I first met Margo Kingston in 2007 when she asked me to report on Leichhardt (Far North Queensland) electorate during the Kevin07 campaign. Leichhardt had the largest swing of the elction, 14% to Labor. I now live in Mandurah, Western Australia in the Canning Electorate. Liberal Candidate Andrew Hastie, has accused “Eastern States Twitterati” of not being local, but I am far more local than Andrew will ever be. I am known as @Jackthelad1947 on Twitter and have a my own blog. I moved to Western Australia in 1976 while serving in the RAAF. I have two […]

#choppergate ‘investigation’ Fact Check by @margokingston1

The AFP and the Department of Finance are playing pass-the-parcel on investigating the legality of Bronwyn Bishop’s helicopter trip to Geelong for a Liberal Party fundraiser. It’s a complicated game of obfuscation that counts on confusing voters. So here are the facts. 1. Applicability of the Minchin Protocol to the AFP When Labor and several members of the public referred the matter to the AFP for investigation it said no, because the Minchin Protocol demanded that Finance had carriage of such matters. Under pressure, the AFP altered its line to insist that it had “not refused to investigate”, had “sent these complaints to Finance for assessment” and “awaits advice from the Department of […]

The @smh #Webdiary story: Interview with @margokingston1 by @timdunlop in his book ‘The New Front Page’ #MediaMargo

My return to journalism via Twitter was enabled by several readers and contributors to Webdiary, which I’m told by online media academic Axel Bruns was the world’s first Mainstream media interactive blog. I’m now committed to telling my story in journalism in a professional memoir, which will comprise part of a PhD. In A collaborative thesis by @margokingston: Stories of citizen journalism with Webdiary and @NoFibs, I launched a new No Fibs series where I hope Webdiary and No Fibs readers will tell their stories, which I will reference in my thesis. No Fibs’ chief sub-editor and arts editor Michael Burge wrote the first post in the series, Voyage to the […]

A collaborative thesis by @margokingston1: Stories of citizen journalism with Webdiary and @NoFibs #MediaMargo

IT’S official, folks. I have a scholarship to do a Doctorate in Creative Practice at Macquarie University on the topic: ‘Experiments in collaboration between professional and citizen journalists: from practice to theory’. The thesis comprises a book for publication and an exegesis. I’m told the first year of the PhD adventure entails reading and thinking through exactly what will be tackled – whittling down the topic to something where one researches in depth and becomes a bit of an expert. The book will be a professional memoir which seeks to explain my journey from mainstream political journalist to Sydney Morning Herald political blogger and editor with Webdiary, website owner when […]

Tony Fitzgerald plays Nostradamus: #Qldpol #murdoch ‘propaganda’ blather will go on

Margo: Tony Morris QC, who, like Brandis, I was at law school with at Queensland University, wrote an opinion piece in today’s Courier Mail critiquing Tony Fitzgerald and backing Tim Carmody’s appointment as Chief Justice of the Queensland Supreme Court. But he has privately condemned it, exposed by the ABC’s Melina Howells June 18,2014. Tony Fitzgerald’s statement in reply today, August 4, 2014: “Another day, with still more boring News Corporation ‘ignore the merits, dissent is bias’ blather. It’s become easy to predict the next stage leading up to the election. 1. The judges of the Supreme Court Trial Division and Court of Appeal will continue to carry out their duties in accordance with their […]
