The business of risk: @adropex on values exposed by Credit Suisse @SantosLtd #Pilliga #csg report

On 3 July Credit Suisse, published a report on the Narrabri Gas Project (NGP). The NGP is a coal seam gas (CSG) operation in the Pillaga State Forest in northwestern NSW, owned and operated by Australian company Santos Ltd. The purpose of the report was: “To assess the risks to the NGP due to the complex environmental and social issues encompassing the history of the project, concerns specific to Narrabri and the NW, and more general issues with CSG particularly in NSW.” The report was compiled after meeting with concerned stakeholder groups including farmers, business owners, irrigators, environmentalists, local councillors, Santos and the heads of major investment funds. Credit Suisse […]

A crash course in CSG’s courtship of farmers: @Thom_Mitchell reports from #Pilliga #leardblockade

“IF the people of Narrabri think they’re going on a date with the handsome new stranger in town, they’re going to go home and find they’ve been raped,” president of People for the Plains, Hugh Barrett, said as we strained to hear. Hugh was giving an interview to ABC radio Tamworth. He was referring to the courtship of Narrabri and surrounds by Coal Seam Gas company (CSG), Santos. People for the Plains is a group fighting to block the development of CSG on the Liverpool Plains. Hugh was speaking on behalf of twenty-five people who’d spent three days touring South East Queensland, talking to people living in and around CSG fields […]

#Pilliga farmers go to town: @naomiTWS on their #SantosAGM experience

Margo: Naomi works full-time as the Wilderness Society campaigner helping #Pilliga residents try to fight the Santos plan to turn much of the Pilliga State Forest into an industrial gas field. And that’s just stage one. The Society’s brief on the campaign is here, and Naomi’s post on how she uncovered the contamination of an aquifer by Santos is here. Pilliga farmers have since launched legal action against Santos to find why bores have been polluted in the area.   Thursday 15 May 2014 Sarah Ciesiolka had not spoken on radio before in her life, let alone done a live interview. She spoke of her experience as a concerned farmer […]

A nation where Miners are Government: #Pilliga farmer @nocsg predicts a Liverpool Plains revolution

Margo: Rosemary Nankivell is a farmer, and one of many women of the NSW Liverpool Plains who have fought long and hard for years to stop the food bowl she loves being turned into industrial gas fields and coal mines. She debuted on No Fibs with a profile of the Councillor who tried to stop Narrabri Council evicting #leardblockade from the Leard State Forest and public space beside a road.  I met her at the #leardblockade ACTUP 2. Farmers unite behind the environment on the #leardblockade: @_stephwilliam_ reports

[clear]   Activists from the Lock the Gate campaign, including ecologists, fear mining companies such as Whitehaven Coal will exploit the Leard State Forest and overlook local concerns about the safety of endangered flora and fauna in the area. “In the Leard State Forest, there are 396 species of native flora and fauna: 34 are on the endangered list,” said Lock the Gate activist, Murray Dreschler. “It cannot be replaced.” Whitehaven Coal’s Maules Creek project will cover 4500 hectares of the total 8000ha of the Leard State Forest, home to the endangered White Box woodlands. Whitehaven Coal declined to comment, but in an ecological assessment conducted by Cumberland Ecology in […]

Your brief on the Santos #CSG #Pilliga saga, by @Wilderness_Aus

Introduction by Margo Kingston These are the latest media briefing notes of the Wilderness Society on the long-running fight to stop Santos fracking the #Pilliga State Forest on the Liverpool Plains in NSW for #CSG. I thought No Fibs readers might find the briefing useful as the story is now politically explosive and will get even more complicated. No Fibs citizen journalist Iris Ray Nunn is No Fibs’ #Pilliga reporter. Her latest report is ‘Repair and hope for the Pilliga Forest’.  Uranium poisoning Gas fracking giant Santos has been found guilty of poisoning an aquifer in the Pilliga Forest in north-west NSW with radioactive uranium 20 times safe levels as well as toxic heavy metals. This […]

Repair and hope for the #Pilliga Forest, by long-time campaigner Iris Ray Nunn

By Iris Ray Nunn 18th March 2014 Margo: Iris covered the battle to save the Pilliga State Forest from Santos CSG for the No Fibs CSG Citizen Journalism project late last year. It seemed hopeless, then… I know big business has not pulled their CSG operations out of the Pilliga, Yet, but, also, as well – I have to share how encouraged and inspired I feel right now at how far this campaign has come in such a short time. It seems like only yesterday that I was in Narrabri reading the front page of The Courier heralding ‘Big rig arrives to begin work’ in the Pilliga, and felt sick […]
