IN THIS NOFIBS podcast, Margo Kingston chats with artist, author, political scientist and Dr Monique Ryan’s campaign manager at the 2022 federal election, Dr Ann Capling.

Dr Capling is originally from Canada and arrived in Australia in 1985, worked as a professor of political science and in 2015 took early retirement to become a water colour painter.

A driving force behind Voices of Kooyong, she helped pull off one of the biggest electoral upsets in Australian political history – Kooyong was the Liberal Party’s crown jewel.

Kingston and Capling discuss the origins of the Kooyong ‘social movement’ Voices of Kooyong, the campaign and some of the questions the movement is grappling with nationally as increasingly diverse electorates seek to participate and do their own politics.

Capling tells Kingston during lockdown on a local Facebook group people became aware – their politicians at all levels of government were “really right wing” and people were disturbed when they “turned really feral”.

Listeners familiar with the Voices for Indi back-story will be struck by the similar drivers of local political participation in the two starkly different electorates.
